Words of Wisdom
Begin using the primary source document, The Declaration of Independence to describe the reasons colonists separated from Great Britian and to describe the colonists views of government.  Using Pair-Share and Whole Group Instruction, students create a graphic organizer (on ISN pg. 3.8) of the information learned by reading the primary source.  Guiding Questions to use with the text of the Declaration (students must quote direct from document to prove answer):
1.  What is the official date the Declaration was adopted?
2.  According to the secondary source, what are the five parts of the document?
3.  What is the purpose of government?
4.  Where does the power of government come from?
5.  What did Kind George III violate?
6.  What can the people do if the government violates the rights of the people?
7.  List three charges against the king.  Write exact quotes that you can explain in your own words.
8.  Locate at least 6 core democratic values.  Be prepared to cite the text to prove the value is present.
9.  Name five signers of the document (story behind largest signature).
