Prepare a statement to read at the Constitutional Convention, use the Role Play Rubric to make sure you include facts of support from the reading notes and from your personal background.
Warm-Up
Answer the questions below on ISN pg. 4.24, write in complete sentences.
1. Does the phrase "count equal for representation" mean "equal rights" or "equal number"?
2. Does "count slaves as property to be taxed like other property" mean that slaves have to pay a tax? Explain your answer.
Building Understanding
1. In what time period was Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement?
2. In what time period did the Constitutional Convention take place?
3. Do you think that MLK would have argued for slave to be counted for representation or property? Or, do you think he would have argued to free all slaves and allow them to be equal citizens?
4. Make two circles and shade both of them so that both show a whole.
5. Make two more circles. Shade one to show a whole and one to show 3/5ths.
6. Why would some delegatges, for purposes of representation and/or taxes argue to count slaves as 3/5ths of a person?
